ALMOST TRUE: Testing Our Favorite Sayings Against Scripture Love is Love

Sep 13, 2026  •  Pastor Ben Tolly

What does it actually mean to love someone? Our culture throws the word around constantly, from pizza to parking spaces to people we would die for, and somewhere in that noise, the real meaning gets lost. This sermon digs into one of the most repeated phrases in modern life, 'love is love,' and asks a question that cuts right to the heart of it: who gets to define love in the first place? Drawing from John 13:34, Psalm 103, and the rich vocabulary of the biblical Greek, we explore how Scripture gives us not just one kind of love but many, each with its own expression and its own proper place. The difference between agape, phileo, storge, and eros is not just an academic exercise. It is a map for understanding why some expressions of love build us up and others quietly tear us down. We are challenged to see that love is not primarily a feeling but a way of living toward another person, and that God, as the author of love, has not left us without instruction on how it works.
